interesting, six years to the date and day and it is raining. all past sep 11 dates since 2001 have been nice late summer days. maybe it is a reminder to us not to forget or let it just pass as another day after the years pass.
it was very hard to hear all the names being read this morning w/o any emotion. Even harder watching the families at the memorial downtown. The parents who lost children, the children who lost parents, spouses and friend remembering those partners they will neve see again.
everyone of us knew someone lost that day either directly or indirectly. I will always remember Tom. I met him at a friend's BBQ on Labor Day 2001. A tall guy with a real NYC accent. We had a really good time that day, our wives knew each other from German social clubs, and our daughters are close in age so they had a ball in the pool. We left saying our good byes and looked forward to our next meeting, at the German parade and upcoming fests two weeks away. we never mentioned our professions.
on sep 11 2001, after getting over the initial shock and checking on friends who worked in or around the area, we checked on the BBQ hostess, who is an American Airlines flight attendant.
we were able to reach her, and she was concerned about Tom, who was FDNY, and knew he would be at the site.
well, six years have passed, and Thomas Hetzel, 33, who was attached to Ladder Co. 13, is a name that will always give me an emotional pause each sep 11. i would have liked to seen him at the parade and would have enjoyed a few Warsteiners with him.
we all experience all ranges of emotions on this day ranging from hate to love, which are all within our rights to feel as human beings. the most import thing is that we never stop feeling, and we never, and I mean NEVER, forget this day and ALL those who WE lost.
